Every piece of Clogau jewellery contains Welsh gold

Welsh gold is one of the rarest and most sought-after golds in the world

Clogau Welsh gold is undoubtedly one of the rarest in the world. Due to the cost of extracting it, Welsh gold is no longer being mined and the remaining supplies are becoming increasing sought-after. Each piece of Clogau contains rare Welsh gold from the Clogau St. David’s Gold Mine in Bontddu (pronounced “bont-thee”), in Snowdonia, North Wales. In 1923 this mine was famously chosen to supply the gold that has been used to create generations of Royal Family wedding rings. Clogau jewellery gives you a piece of this wonderful and unique heritage with every piece.

Welsh gold is worn by Royalty

Since 1923 the Royal family have been wearing wedding rings made from pure Welsh gold. This tradition was founded by The Queen Mother, then Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, on her marriage to the Duke of York on 26th April, and continues to this day with the Duchess of Cambridge.

Other members of the Royal family that have worn Welsh gold rings include Her Majesty the Queen, Diana Princess of Wales, Her Highness Princess Margaret Countess of Snowdon, and Their Royal Highnesses Prince Charles and The Duchess of Cornwall.

Welsh gold stamp

We stamp every piece of jewellery, size permitting, with the Clogau logo and Welsh Dragon. The Welsh Dragon stamp indicates that Welsh gold from the Clogau St. David’s Gold Mine in Bontddu, Snowdonia, is included in your piece.

There are other marks that you will find on your jewellery including our sponsor’s mark (the “CG”), the standard mark which indicates the type of fineness of the precious metal and Edinburgh castle, the symbol of the Edinburgh Assay Office.

Certificate of Authenticity

We guarantee that your Clogau jewellery contains rare Clogau Welsh gold extracted from the Clogau St. David's Gold Mine in the heart of Snowdonia, North Wales, once owned by the company.

The Clogau gold mine is situated in one of the most stunning parts of Wales, deep in the heart of Snowdonia. Interestingly, it first opened as a copper mine in 1842 and it wasn't until 1854 that gold was accidentally discovered there.

The Clogau St. David's Gold Mine has gone through mixed fortunes over the last century due to the veins of gold being very inconsistent and difficult to locate. This has made Clogau Welsh gold extremely rare.
